Polish school does not need any reform as much as it needs well trained teachers. And that was the purpose of setting up the School of Education, that is a full-time post-graduate course for future teachers of Polish or mathematics. The program of the course was prepared in cooperation with the Teachers College, Columbia University. And now enrollment to the School is on. The future teachers have also an opportunity to get a scholarship.

Educators all over the world agree that no reform or systemic change can improve the quality of education as much as good teachers can. “Here, in Poland, we are arguing about secondary issues, such as number of students in a class, teaching aids or types of schools. And we tend to forget that first of all we need teachers well trained for their work. Without them, even best solutions will not improve our schools,” says Prof. Jolanta Sujecka-Zając, Director of the School of Education that was set up by the Polish-American Freedom Foundation (PAFF) and University of Warsaw (UW).

Internship every day for 10 months
Support for teachers is offered by the Polish-American Freedom Foundation and University of Warsaw, founders of the School of Education. The School runs the only free-of-charge full-time post-graduate courses for teachers of Polish or mathematics. The students have 300 hours of internship –they spend every morning at schools with their students, where they work according to scenarios which they had prepared and trained at the School of Education. The internship is combined with their curriculum: they can train in practice their skills gained at school, but also discuss with tutors their experiences from work with students.
The PAFF and UW School of Education cooperates with schools of every type – public, nonpublic and private and at every level of education, from elementary to secondary high. Students can start in their own, individual rhythm. What’s more, they are supervised by best Polish tutors, educated for example in the prestigious Teachers College, Columbia University.
